What is Med-Chi?
The Brighton and Sussex Medico-Chirurgical Society was founded in 1847 as a forum for medical education and to promote discussion between hospital doctors, general practitioners and medical students. The Society is referred to simply as "Med-Chi" (pronounced "med-ki") and is one of the oldest medical societies in England.  Lectures normally take place at 7pm on the first thursday of the month in the main hall at the Audrey Emerton building (AEB), Royal Sussex County Hospital.   A new president is appointed annually who sets the year's programme of diverse lectures and events.  For further information, please see http://brightonmedchi.org.uk.
Why should I become a member?
All BSMS students are automatically a member of the Society and invited to attend!
Why should I attend?
Enjoy free tea/ coffee and biscuits. Interesting and varied presentations relevant to BSMS students. Recent examples include:
  • A brief history of blood (Dr Tim Chevassut)
  • From local to global - an overview of global health (Prof Melanie Newport)
  • What kind of doctor do we want and how do we select them  (Prof Malcolm Reed)
  • Removing vulnerabilities:  the ethical case for clinical research involving children and young people (Prof Bobby Farsides)
What opportunities are there to get more involved?
Med-Chi welcomes student involvement in the society.  In addition to attending diverse educational and social events, BSMS students can present student research (e.g. IRP or intercalated degree) as part of a Med-Chi session.   Students are involved as council members, assisting with publicity and supporting Med-Chi's collaboration with the BSMS widening participation programme.  We are also active in the history of medicine and opportunities exist for BSMS students to research and publish material from our extensive archives.
