BrightWAMS is a widening access programme, targeting years 5 and 6 in local state schools. It drives educational attainment and raises future aspirations of studying medicine at BSMS or elsewhere, whilst being able to form strong links with the community. We have 1-2 visits to schools each term. BSMS students can get involved in teaching sessions to small groups of children on subjects, such as the digestive, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. This enables medical students to teach what they have learnt or are learning during first year in a simplified manner, which not only improves their communication skills with children, but their teaching skills as well. We take along stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers, tendon hammers, and pen torches for the children to have a go at using. This interactive learning aims to engage the pupils and make it fun for them, but teaches them something new at the same time. We get involved with other events such as the Brighton Science Festival, which takes place in the summer term. We aim to organise a campus visit during the year for a class or two too. Look out for our social events and be sure to get involved with our visits - you won't regret it!
